VIRGINIA “MAE” MONSON
Virginia Mae (Haugen) Monson was born on Christmas Day, 1923, to Bertin and Valborg Haugen. She was the youngest of four siblings including two brothers and one sister. She grew up and attended grade school in Dazey, ND and graduated HS in 1941 from Hannaford HS. In 1942, while still single, she worked for the “CCC” in Cooperstown where she met her future husband, K.A. (Little Kenny) Monson. They were married in August of 1944 and celebrated 67 years together. Two children were born to this union, a son Roger in 1946 and a daughter Leona in 1948.
Kenny and Mae purchased a farm in Washburn Township, Griggs County, in 1945 where Mae spent the next 35 years working side by side with Kenny in their farming operation. Following these years, They enjoyed their retirement traveling and sharing hobbies. Shortly after Kenny’s death in 2011, Mae became a full-time resident of the Griggs County Care Center in Cooperstown. After 8 years of loving care by the nursing home staff, she passed away there living to the age of almost 96 years.
Mae volunteered in many capacities in her lifetime. She was the church organist for the Sheyenne Valley Lutheran Church, rural Finley, for over three decades where she also taught Sunday School and was active in her circle and Ladies Aid groups. She belonged to a homemakers club for 45 years, was a 4-H leader, a member of the American Legion Auxilliary and served on the Griggs Co. Museum board of directors. She and Kenny loved to square dance and play pinochle with friends. She enjoyed doing all sorts of handwork, including Hardanger, and was an excellent seamstress.
Mae was preceded in death by her parents, husband K.A. (Little Kenny) Monson, sister, Ida (Norwin) Hanson, brothers Joseph (Betty) Haugen and Harold (Pauline) Haugen. She is survived by her son, Roger (Kathy) Monson, Fargo, ND and Leona Monson, Bakersfield, CA; by two grandchildren, Ryan (Kristi) Monson, The Woodlands, TX and Stephanie (Brent) Kaiser, Grand Forks, ND and six great grandchildren, Brady and Abby Monson, and Jadyn, Nicholas, Max and Magnus Kaiser.
Mae was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be dearly missed by her entire family. God bless the memory of our loved one forever.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 4, 2019 from 4:00 pm till 6:00 pm in the Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, ND, with a Prayer Service at 6:00 pm in the Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Thursday, December 5, 2019 from 10:00 am till 11:00 am followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 am in the Trinity Lutheran Church, Cooperstown, ND. Interment will be in the Sheyenne Valley Cemetery, rural Finley, ND.
