ROGER M. STOKKA

November 20, 1941 — August 10, 2024

COOPERSTOWN, ND

ROGER MURRAY STOKKA

Roger Murray “BG” Stokka went home to his Savior on August 10, 2024 at Hospice House in Fargo.

Roger was born November 20, 1941 to Elmer and Gladys Stokka in Greenbelt, Maryland. His family later settled in Yankton, South Dakota and then moved to Cooperstown, North Dakota following the death of his mother Gladys.

He graduated from Oak Grove High School and earned a degree at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, followed by a masters degree in Education from Cal State Fullerton.

His first teaching and administration job was for Hannaford High School, where he also drove the bus.

He took a leap of faith and moved to California in 1968, working for Narramore Christian Foundation until he found permanent work teaching Spanish and History. During that time he met Sharon Stirk and her young son Kirk. They were married in Fullerton in 1970. The family moved to North Dakota in 1973 and then returned to Southern California in 1976 where he continued his lifelong teaching career. He was loved and respected by students and faculty alike.

Following Sharon’s passing in 2009 he moved back to his beloved North Dakota and eventually found love and companionship with Lynn Myers. They were married February 14, 2018. They enjoyed spending the spring and summers in North Dakota and snowbirding in Arizona.

In his free time he collected classic cars and even dabbled in home construction during his younger years. He was a bona fide baby whisperer, true friend to many, and worshipped God freely and unapologetically. His faith was an inspiration to those who knew him well.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, son Kirk, and first wife Sharon.

He is survived by his love Lynn Stokka, sister Carol Frost, brother Glen Stokka, daughters Kristen, Cherise (David), grandchildren Caleb Mueller, Hannah (Carlos) Romero, Jenavieve Rudy, Katelyn Rudy, Jaydin Mueller, great grandson Manolo Romero, three step-grandchildren, and numerous beloved nieces, nephew, and cousins. He is also survived by several classic cars, as we all know.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, August 31st, 1pm at Zion Lutheran Church in Cooperstown followed by burial and coffee at 2:30pm at Saron Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Saron Church, Cooperstown.
