Grace Myrleen (Nissy) Bakken
Grace Myrleen (Nissy) Bakken joined her late husband Roger Bakken when she passed away peacefully at the Griggs Care Center, Cooperstown, ND on Tuesday, April 14, 2020.
Nissy was born on September 18, 1929 in Cooperstown, ND the daughter of John and Lydia (Michaelis) Kramvik. She had 2 brothers, Louis (Bud) and LeRoy (Ole) and one sister, Lauretta Brown. Nissy attended her early elementary school years in a one room country schoolhouse just outside of Cooperstown and graduated from Cooperstown High School in 1947.
On August 29, 1948 Nissy married her high school sweetheart, Roger Bakken at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cooperstown. Together they enjoyed many wonderful years in “Cooper” where they owned the Coast to Coast Hardware Store and were very active in their community. Nissy loved playing cards, golfing and “coffee” with friends and family.
Nissy and Roger loved hosting many get-togethers in their home and were always the “go to place” for high school class reunions. They loved to travel. Special memories were made at the Coast to Coast “Markets” and visiting family and grandchildren in Florida. Nissy had a special spot in her heart for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was always available to babysit and attended every activity or school function she could!
Nissy had a heart of gold and was always willing to volunteer to help others. She was a long- term member and volunteer at Trinity Lutheran church and enjoyed the philanthropy of PEO and the American Legion Auxiliary. Everyone will miss “Nissy’s buns” which she generously made for many functions and family get togethers.
Typically, Nissy’s weeks were filled with countless hours of volunteerism. She and Roger delivered meals on wheels for years and she loved “doing hair” at the Cooperstown Nursing Home. Nissy always commented on how wonderful the care was at the nursing home and wouldn’t mind living there “someday”. Nissy and Roger moved into the Cooperstown Nursing Home three years ago and personally experienced the loving care of the providers and staff.
Nissy leaves behind her two children Danny (Robin) Bakken, Dave (Libby) Bakken, three grandchildren Randi (Nate) Johnson, Ally Bakken, Matt Bakken and two great-grandchildren Ryan Johnson, Jayden Johnson and brother LeRoy (Miyoko) Kramvik of Okinawa, Japan. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and families that Nissy thought the world of.
Preceding her in death are her husband Roger, her parents John and Lydia, brother Louis, sister; Lauretta Brown; brother-in-law Bill Brown.
Memorials can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or The Cooperstown Medical Center Foundation.
A Memorial Service will be held June 23, 2020 at 2:00 pm in the Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, ND with interment in the Cooperstown, Cemetery.
