Lorraine Laura Burgum, 91, died Tuesday, August 9, 2022 in the CMC Hospital, Cooperstown, ND with her family by her side.
Lorraine was born June 3, 1931 in Coleharbor, ND to German immigrants, David and Lydia Eslinger. She was the 7th of 11 children.
She later moved to Garrison, ND with her family. It was here she later started school and began the difficult task of learning to speak English. She voiced many times how angry the teachers got if she spoke German. They later lived a short time in Ackley, MN before moving to Hannaford, ND in 1942. She finished her schooling at Dover Country School.
Lorraine was born during the Great Depression. She often talked about tough times. Sharing clothes, shoes and rationing food to make it stretch but she said, I always had plenty of siblings to play with.
Lorraine met the love of her life while visiting her sister in South Dakota. Lorraine married James G. Burgum on November 26, 1955 in Bismarck, ND. They were married by James Uncle, Leslie Burgum, who believe it or not, also married Lorraine’s parents David and Lydia years earlier.
They made their first home in Pierre, SD. This is where all three of their children were born. They also lived in Ft. Thompson and Highmore, SD. In 1964 they moved to Larimore, ND as James took a job at the Grand Forks Air Force base. They always said this was the best place to raise their kids.
Lorraine was a devoted wife and mother. She kept busy driving her kids to school activities, swimming lessons, Girl Scouts and piano lessons. She loved cooking for her family and friends. She was a true German cook. She taught herself dog grooming and later had a little dog grooming business out of her home. She loved Country music, singing, playing guitar and singing with her brothers. She loved camping and fishing with her family. She loved to drop-in visits from her neighbors and many friends. The coffee pot was always on.
The light in her life was always her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. After the death of her husband in1996, Lorraine moved to Cooperstown, ND. In 2012 she moved to Hannaford to be closer to family.
Lorraine is survived by two daughters, Debra (Alton) Dahl, Hannaford, ND and Kathy (Larry) Larson, Fargo, ND; four grandchildren, Matthew (Lisa O’Brien) Dahl, Hannaford, ND, Stephanie (Casey) Skjeret, Hannaford, ND, Timothy Dahl, Hannaford, ND and Nick (Nikki) Larson, Fergus Falls, MN; five great grandchildren, Lincoln Dahl, Macy and Cash Skjeret, Nora and Evan Larson; brothers, Albert Eslinger, Bernhart Eslinger, Hannaford, ND and Elmer (Marcia) Eslinger, Cooperstown, ND; sister in law, Nadine Eslinger, Hannaford, ND; several cousins, nieces and nephews who she held dear to her heart.
