Jergen Soma, 88, Cooperstown, ND, died Monday, May 27, 2019 in the Cooperstown Medical Center Hospital, Cooperstown, ND.
Jergen Soma was born January 9, 1931 to Torger and Inga (Njaa) Soma of Cooperstown, ND. He died on Monday, May 27, 2019 at the Cooperstown Medical Center Hospital. He grew up attending the Shepard School and Cooperstown School. He began farming with his father, taking over the family farm in 1955. He continued farming full time until 2000.
Jergen met the love of his life, Beverly Kloster of Sharon, ND, and married her on October 25, 1952. They had 66 years together. They had 2 children, Kathy and Tim. Tim followed in his father’s footsteps, taking over the farm. Jergen and Bev enjoyed going on Canadian fishing excursions as a family, travelling to Texas in their later years, and enjoying being a “go for” guy on the farm.
Jerg enjoyed target shooting, hunting geese and prairie dogs, riding motorcycle, and taking rides to “check the crops”, hearing the field planting and harvesting updates, and hearing about the antics of his great grandsons.
As a young man Jerg was very active in the Civil Air Patrol rising to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He served on the Shepard Elevator Board, the Farmers Oil Board, Bald Hill Township Board, and was a member of Fort Atchison Rifle Club.
Jergen is survived by his children Kathy and husband Tom Gawronski, son Tim and wife Deb Soma, all of Cooperstown. 2 grandchildren – Hannah and husband Jeremy Schmidgall, Vining, Minnesota, and Travis Soma (special friend Alyssa Jacobsen) of Cooperstown. 4 great grandsons –Tayden, Porter, Brodyn, and Boone, of Vining, MN. He is also survived by his sisters He is also survived by his sisters Peggy (Angela Andrist)(Eagan, MN), Kaarin (Toufik Bouzino) (Crosby, TX) and Karla Rislov (Badger, MN) and brother David of Mandan, ND. Brother-in-law Sully (Linda) Kloster of Sharon, ND, and brother-in-law Jim (Karen) Kloster, of Mesa, AZ and several nieces and nephews.
Jergen was preceded in death by his wife Beverly, his parents, sister Georgine and husband Earl Lynnes, brother-in-law Larry Rislov, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Kitty and Ardean Nelson, and niece Paula Jacobson.
A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday June 4, 2019 at 2:00 pm in the Trinity Lutheran Church, Cooperstown. Interment will be in Westley Cemetery, rural Cooperstown.
