James Erwin Lura, 95, died Saturday, October 30, 2021 in SMP Health–St. Raphael Nursing Home in Valley City, ND.

James was born February 9, 1926 on the family farm near Cooperstown, ND to Erling and Jeanette (Benson) Lura.  He attended rural Shephard School in Griggs County, where he had to learn English as all the family spoke was Norwegian in their home.

James married Dorothy Solfield on March 8, 1953. The couple farmed the family farm in the Cooperstown area and retired in 1991.  He and Dorothy moved into Cooperstown in 1996. 

James was well known by everyone in the community.  He enjoyed spending time with family and friends by fishing, bowling, playing cards, traveling, golfing, picking berries for canning, making lefse and cream corn.  He was also a long-time member of Sons of Norway and Trinity Lutheran Church in Cooperstown.

James is survived by his children Denise (Chris) Childs, Silverton, OR; Janel (Joe Banister) Lura, Fargo, ND; Sandra (Robert) Kantola, Fargo, ND; Mark (Vickie) Lura, Sanborn, ND; grandsons Austin (Sarah) Lura, Oslo, MN and Collin Lura; Valley City, ND; great-granddaughter Hattie Lura; brother Robert (Millie) Lura, Cooperstown, ND; sisters Senora Olgaard, Casper, WY and June Berg of AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, parents, and sister Louise (Tweed) Randall.

Visitation will be Saturday November 6, 2021 from 1-2p.m. followed by the service at 2 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, Cooperstown, ND.  Interment will be at the Cooperstown Cemetery immediately after the service.  Virtual Service available online.
