DONALD L. SUSSEX
Donald L. Sussex, 91, Hope, ND passed away May 19, 2022, in the Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, ND.
Donald was born March 17, 1931 in Valley City, ND the son of George and Elsie (McFarlane) Sussex. He grew up on a farm near Hope, ND. He graduated from Hope High School in 1949. He attended NDSU for 1 ½ years before joining the US Navy. He was stationed in Sanford FL. He served two years with the Naval Fighter Squadron and two years with the Hurricane Hunter Squadron out of Jacksonville.
On May 28, 1952 he married his high school sweetheart, Lorraine M. Trost in Hope, ND. The couple made their home in Jacksonville, FL. In 1953 Don and Lorraine welcomed their son, Boyd, at the Naval Base Hospital in Jacksonville. September 22, 1955 he was discharged and the family returned to Hope.
He began working with his father and brothers on the three generation centennial Sussex Brother’s Farm. He continued farming for many years and enjoyed helping other area farmers after his retirement in 1993. Don was very active in the Hope Community. He was a charter member of the Hope Farmers Elevator and active in the American Legion Honor Guard, school board. Hope Housing and church board. He was a member of the Congregational Church, United Church of Hope and now Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hope, ND. He enjoyed spending his spare time keeping busy with wood working, helping area farmers, lawn care and attending sporting events.
He is survived by his wife Lorraine; son, Boyd (Kathy); grandson, Jackson (Val); great grandson, Baker Donald and great granddaughter, Lauren Kay; sisters -in-law, Darlene Cooper, Donna (Walter) Grotte; brother-in law, Dean (Norma) Trost; many nieces, nephews.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, George and Elsie; in-laws Ed and Elizabeth Trost, brother, Robert and many brothers and sisters-in-law.
A Memorial Service will be Monday, May 23, 2022 at 2:00 pm in the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hope, ND. Visitation will be from 1:00 till 2:00 at the church. Interment will be in the Hope Cemetery, Hope, ND with full Military Honors.
