DAVID S SALANDER

David Stephen Salander, 74, Hope, N.D., died Saturday, Sept. 18, while in hospice care at Mercy Hospital in Valley City. He was born September 22, 1946 and grew up in Dazey and Hope, ND, with his parents, Jeanette (Quick) and Harold Salander amidst a large, loving, extended family. While growing up, David enjoyed working on the farm, playing sports and music.  He was gifted with and entertained many with his beautiful singing voice. He graduated from Hope High School in 1964. 

David married Agnes Berge of Dazey on December 18, 1965.  The union was blessed with six children: Davene, Tim, Matt, Disa, Daniel and DeAnna. David’s love for sports and music carried on through his children.  His greatest legacy was his kindness to all, regardless of age, race, sexual identity, religion, economic status or mental or physical disabilities. While his kids were young, Dave held many different positions at local grain elevators across the state.  In 1988, Agnes and David divorced and he moved to Grand Forks, ND where he began working with the developmentally disabled community.  While in Grand Forks, he met Darra Kennedy. Together they raised her daughter, Jessica, and after moving to Darra's home state of Oklahoma, they welcomed David's fourth son, Adam.  

David lived in Oklahoma for nearly 30 years. In his later years, he enjoyed coming home in the summer to help with the wheat and soybean harvest.  David moved permanently to Hope, ND in 2017, where he remained until his passing.  

David is survived by his children Tim (Marna) Salander, Fargo, ND, Matt (Robin) Salander, Larimore, ND, Disa (Brian) Julius, Minot, ND, Daniel (Lacy) Salander, Lincoln, ND and DeAnna (Kelly) Lozensky, South Prairie, ND, Adam Salander, Moore, OK; grandchildren:  Cali (Myles) Torell, Reed and Seth Niewiadommski and Ian Row, Claire, Eva, Jack and Piper Salander, Gabe (Jordan) Salander, Tucker, Bo Salander, Hailee Salander, Jaxon Salander and Paislee and Nash Lozensky. Siblings: Mark Salander, Sue (Tim) Parkman, and Angie Erickson, all of Hope, ND along with numerous nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Davene Row, grandson Caleb Salander, wife Agnes Berge, sister-in-law Sandy (Mark) Salander and wife Darra Salander. 

A Memorial Service will be Monday, September 27, 2021 at 10:00 am in the Hope American Legion, Hope, ND.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
