CHARLES “CHUCK” VIRGIL DEHOFF

Charles “Chuck” Virgil DeHoff was born in Carlton, Kansas on March 7, 1934, the last of 4 children.  His parents were Roy Harrison DeHoff and Margaret Elizabeth Sparks.  Margaret was told she had a ‘tumor’; she was six months pregnant before they knew she was having a baby, (Charles) and not a tumor.  Chuck graduated from Hope High School in Topeka, Kansas in 1952. Margaret often called Chuck by his middle name of Virgil, she also called two of her other children by their middle names, which also started with the letter V.  While harvesting with his Dad at the age of 12, Chuck picked up his love for copenhagen. After graduating High school he got his pilot’s license and bought an airplane for delivering supplies to many people in Kansas.

Chuck grew up in the Baptist Church on July 15, 1945 at the age of 16, was baptized in a creek not far from his home in Kansas. Chuck was confirmed in the Lutheran faith May 2, 1965 at Zion Lutheran and became an active member.

Chuck and Alice met in October of 1961 at the bowling alley in Cooperstown where Alice was a waitress. Chuck was stationed at the Air Force base in Finley.  They married on March 24, 1962, at Grace Lutheran Church in Cooperstown, ND, combining their two families.  Son’s Bobby, David, Charlie and daughter’s Laurie and Julie. They moved around a bit while Chuck was in the Air Force, living in such places as Finley, Cooperstown and Fortuna, ND and two years in Crete, Greece.  In 1968 Chuck and Alice’s brother Bill bought the Michael D. Leininger Farm (Bill and Alice’s grandparents) and called that home. In 1970 Tina joined the family and in 1975 Angie made it seven children.

Chuck joined the Army in November 1953; he would spend 4 years in the army before joining the Air Force in February 1957.  He was an Aircraft Mechanic until January 1969, then a Power Plant Supervisor until he retired in 1974 with the rank of Master Sergeant.  Chuck went on to work at Melroe, in a coal mine in Buelah, ran a Dairy Farm, farmed, drove for Border States Paving and sold AAL insurance before, in 1994, he bought his own semi and started DeHoff Trucking and 1996 brokered with Kyllo Trucking, he retired in 2015.

Chuck loved to be with his family.  He loved camping, watching game shows and westerns, he liked to travel, eat spicy things, play cards, copenhagen and most of all he loved to visit!! He could talk the leg off a table. He was an extremely generous man and helped anyone that asked.

Charles Virgil DeHoff is survived by wife Alice Marie (Rahlf) DeHoff and his children; David, Moorhead, MN; Charlie, Binford; Laurie (Steve) Fisher, Valley City, ND; Julie Keller, Cooperstown, ND; Tina (John) Rice, Alexandria, MN; and Angie (Chad) Sorenson, Larimore, ND. 17 grandchildren, and 28 great grandchildren.
