BERNICE HOPWOOD
Bernice Hopwood, 86, Sharon, ND died Sunday, December 13, 2020 in the Union Hospital Mayville, ND.
Bernice was born on August 25, 1934 to Mary (Kilanowski) and Ben Drong in Browerville, Minnesota. At the age of 14 she moved with her family to a farm south of Courtenay. She grew up there and graduated from Courtenay High School in 1952.
After graduation she moved to Arizona. She met and married Milton Smith in 1954. From that marriage that had 2 children. She moved back to North Dakota and worked on a grain and dairy farm.
She married Erbie Hopwood in December of 1963 and they made their home in Courtenay until 1966 when they moved to Sharon, ND. While raising her family, Bernice worked at the Good Samaritan nursing home in Aneta, North Dakota and the café in Sharon. She did baby sitting and later went on to manage the café. Bernice was known for her caring ways with the residents at the home and with the children that were in her care. Bernice loved to do crafting, sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She made sure that each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all had afghans that she made with her love. She was especially known for her good cooking and baking. From donuts to cookies to holey bread to her yummy homemade vegetable beef, dumpling soup that graced the table every Christmas. Bernice loved family time, puzzles, playing cards, and visiting in person and on the phone with her family. She especially loved her past pets, Zeke, Princess and Benji.
Bernice is survived by her husband, Erbie, of Sharon, ND, 5 children, Kathryn (Tracy) Elliott of Broomfield, Co, Rebecca (Dale) Van Erem of Spiritwood, ND, Laurie (Brian) Grandalen of Portland, ND, Vicki (Gene) Thompson of Kindred, ND and Scottie (Lauri) Hopwood of Minot, ND, 7 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Frances Brewer of Jamestown, ND, Mary Van Winkle of Renton, WA and 1 brother James Drong of Valley City, ND, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents and 1 brother, Tony Drong.
Due to covid, restrictions must be followed and masks must be worn. Visitation will be Friday, December 18, 2020, from 11:30 to 1:30 pm in the Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home in Cooperstown, ND. Due to Covid restrictions, a private family service will be held at 2:00 pm. Interment will be held at a later date in the Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, ND.
