Mabel G. Anderson

Mabel G. Anderson, 94, of Mayville, ND formerly of Finley, ND, died Friday, October 29, 2010 at Luther Memorial Home, Mayville. Mabel was born May 21, 1916 to Albert and Clara (Haugtvedt) Gilbertson on the family farm near Sharon, ND. She attended a rural school near their home and attended high school in Sharon, graduating in 1934. She attended Mayville State College for one year and also Interstate Business College. She then went back to Sharon and worked in Ellingson’s Store while the owner went south for the winter. Mabel was always fixing hair while in college and thought this is what she really wanted to do. She enrolled in a hairdressing school in Fargo, ND and worked for her boarding as a nanny for three children. In 1941, she worked in a salon at the Gardner Hotel in Fargo. Mabel married Earl R. Anderson on April 21, 1946 at Finley Lutheran Church in Finley. They lived in Herman, MN for two years before moving to Sharon. They bought a piece of land near Finley and built their first home there. Mabel started her hairdressing shop in her home at that time, and continued operating it until retiring at the age of 88. Earl died in January, 1991 and Mabel continued living on the farm until moving to Mayville in July, 2009. Mabel loved her family very much, taking great pride in her grandchildren. Over the years Mabel enjoyed lots of sewing, baking (she hated to cook, though), hardanger, and making rugs on her loom. She also was church organist for 30 years. Mabel is survived by her 3 daughters, Mary Anderson now of Finley, Barbara (Joe) Dekker of Finley and Susan (Steve) Fiebiger of Jupiter, FL; six grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Oby of St. Thomas, ND and Della Mckenzie of Littleton, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Alpha; brother, Arvid; son, Richard; and husband, Earl. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 11:00a.m. at Ostervold Lutheran Church, rural Finley, ND. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5:00 till 7:00 at Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home in Finley, ND and one hour before services at Ostervold Lutheran Church. A Prayer Service will be held Friday at 7:00 at Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Ostervold Cemetery, rural Finley, ND.
