VERNA NYGAARD

VERNA DORES NYGAARD March 23, 1921 ~ January, 23, 2015 Verna Dores Nygaard, 93, Finley, ND died on Friday, January 23, 2015 at the Northwood Deaconess Health Center, Northwood, ND. She was born on March 23, 1921 to Theodore and Olive (Hagen) Ostenson. She graduated from Sharon High School in 1939 and worked for many years at the Ellingson’s Store in Sharon, ND and the Johnson Store in Finley, ND. On June 6, 1954, Verna married Kermit A. Nygaard of Finley in McVille, ND. They spent all their married life on the Nygaard farm. Kermit passed away on May 8, 2006. Verna was a member of the Ostervold Welca, Sharon Homemakers, and Sharon Senior Citizens. She was a Sunday School superintendent, teacher, and a 4-H leader. Verna moved to the nursing home in Northwood in 2010. Verna was blessed with a green thumb, the ability to sew whatever you needed, and prepare the most delicious meals. She seldom missed her children’s school activities while they were in high school. She was a true farmer’s wife; helping with the harvest and taking care of the cattle. We will never forget when she shot two raccoons out of the tree with one shot. Playing bingo was a favorite pastime. Verna is survived by her sons David, Finley, ND and Donald, Sharon, ND; daughters Janine (Dean) Groseth, Grand Forks, ND and Brenda (Gene) Johnson of Killeen, TX; Grandchildren Christopher, Erin, Adam, Sarah, Jessica, Ashley, Heather, and Courtney; Great-Grandchildren Eli, Elin, Lillian, Alexander, and Madison; brother Ted (Rose) Ostenson of Sharon, ND; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and three sisters; Gladys Johnson, Thelma Gylten, and Alice Ostenson. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 10:30 am in the Ostervold Lutheran Church, rural Finley, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 26, 2015 from 5:00 till 7:00 in the Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home in Finley and one hour before services in the Church. Interment will be Wednesday in Ostervold Cemetery, rural Finley, ND.
