Valborg Thompson, 99, of Devils Lake, ND died Thursday, April 5, 2012 in Mercy Hospital, in Devils Lake, ND. Valborg was born on a farm west of Walum, ND in Bartley Township on December 3, 1912. Valborg was baptized at Eidfjord Lutheran Church, rural Walum. As a young girl the family moved and she attended a small grade school in a railroad camp in Hoquiam, WA. The family moved to Shelton, WA and she finished 8th grade there. She was confirmed and started high school in Aberdeen, WA. When the family moved back to North Dakota, there was not enough room in the 1927 Touring car for Valborg and her sister, Anna. They stayed in Washington and worked for families for $1.50 per week plus room and board. In 1930, she was able to rejoin her family in Oberon, ND as a sophomore in high school. She graduated from Oberon High School in 1932. She worked in various positions in the area until she entered nurses training in the fall of 1935 at Mercy Hospital in Valley City, ND. She graduated in 1938 and worked at the hospital in Mayville, ND. She married Ray VenHuizen on October 12, 1939. They farmed in Dover Township. She and Ray were divorced and she moved to Valley City, ND where she worked as a nurse at Sheyenne Memorial Hospital. She married Casper Thompson on October 5, 1957. They farmed near Hannaford, ND. After Casper’s death in 1978, she moved to Dazey, ND and later moved to Sibley, ND where she lived for several years. In 1995 she moved to an apartment in Devils Lake, ND in order to be closer to her daughter, Linda. She liked to read, crochet, do crossword puzzles, play pinochle and other games, dance, listen to music and travel. She loved to laugh and always had a smile for everyone. . . she was full of joy and shared it abundantly. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate doctors and staff at Mercy Hospital and the Good Samaritan Center in Devils Lake, ND. She is survived by her children: Linda (David) Madson, Oberon, ND and Bradley (Randi) VenHuizen, Omaha, NE; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; and 13 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Casper Thompson; son, Kent VenHuizen; sisters: Anna Kloster and Hjordis Poulsen; and brothers: Noralf, Theodore, Einar, Olaf and Harold Tweit. Under His wings her soul shall abide, safely abide forever. Funeral services will be Monday, April 9, 2012 in Our Saviors Lutheran Church at 2:00 pm in Devils Lake, ND. Second Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 11, 2012 11:00 am at Eidfjord Lutheran Church, rural Walum, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 10, 2012 from 5:00 till 7:00 in the Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home in Cooperstown, ND and one hour before services in both Churches. Interment will be in the Eidfjord Cemetery.
